Palmetto Nuclear Coalition Issues Statement on Company Chosen to Lead VC Summer Project
Columbia, S.C. (October 24, 2025) - Today, the Palmetto Nuclear Coalition released the following statement regarding Santee Cooper’s announcement that Brookfield was selected to lead the VC Summer project.
This announcement is a major victory for South Carolina, paving the way for American energy independence and significant local prosperity. This achievement was made possible by strong, collaborative leadership. Jimmy Staton and the entire Santee Cooper team deserve credit for advancing President Trump’s energy agenda and ensuring South Carolina fully recognizes the value of this asset to the benefit of its ratepayers. Santee Cooper is to be commended for conducting a rigorous, world-class review process of the unfinished assets at VC Summer, and for reaching a tentative agreement that will benefit every South Carolinian.
We want to thank President Trump for making this announcement possible, through his championing of a robust energy agenda that supports innovation, economic growth, and American energy dominance.
We also want to recognize Governor Henry McMaster’s strong and consistent leadership in advancing nuclear energy, both statewide and nationally, and his steadfast commitment to always advocating for the people of South Carolina.
Finally, we thank the South Carolina General Assembly for supporting this exploratory process and recognizing the opportunity to achieve a major victory for the citizens of our state.
Restarting this vital project not only allows South Carolina to play a role in securing American energy independence for generations to come, but it will also create thousands of high-quality jobs, strengthen our skilled workforce and lead to long-term economic growth and prosperity right here at home.
